The Perineum
Pelvic floor health has been and still is an often neglected component to a healthy pregnancy.  Women need to become very familiar with their pelvic floor and do all they can to maintain its integrity by performing pelvic muscle exercises and protecting the perineum.  The perineum is the area of skin between the vagina and the rectum and it is an area worth protecting!  It will face tremendous pressure during childbirth and may tear if not properly taken care of. Stretching the perineum (also called Perineal Massage) prior to childbirth as well as during, can help prevent tearing or requiring an episiotomy.

Episiotomy
Ifyou are not familiar with the term, an episiotomy is an incision made in the perineal area either towards the anus or on an angle.  The thinking behind this procedure is that it enlarges the space for the baby’s head to pass through.  Episiotomies can lead to complications such as longer healing time, painful intercourse post partum as well as deep tears that result from the pressure of the emerging head increasing the size of the episiotomy incision.  Damage from deep tears can lead not only to urinary incontinence but also to rectal incontinence due to anal sphincter damage.

Why is Pelvic Floor Health Important?
As a mother you are taking every care to ensure your baby is healthy and protected.  You need, however, to ensure that you are healthy and protected as well.  By strengthening your pelvic floor during your pregnancy with an EPI-NO Delphine Plus you are creating a strong foundation to carry the weight of your growing baby and support the anatomical changes that are happening to your body.  This foundation will also play a key role in handling the physical aspect of childbirth itself.  By stretching your perineum with the EPI-NO Delphine Plus prior to delivery you will reduce the likelihood of tearing, therefore decreasing your healing time and maintaining the overall health of this sensitive area.  With a protected perineum and a strong pelvic floor you will recover much quicker post partum and will be less likely to experience challenges such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse or painful, less pleasurable sex.  Post Partum, your EPI-NO Delphine Plus will help you regain and maintain the strength and integrity of your muscles ensuring your pelvic floor wellness.
